St Donnan’s, Eigg : the small community of Catholics there continue to give witness to Christ.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Yesterday I visited the parishioners on the island of Eigg and celebrated Mass in their beautiful Church of St Donnan. St Donnan was a Celtic monk who preached the Gospel to the Picts living in the northwest of Scotland. He established a monastery on Eigg where, along with 53 other monks, he was martyred by pirates in 617. It was good to see that the small community of Catholics are continuing to witness to Christ as people have done on Eigg for over 1,400 years. They also invited the wider community to join them for Mass, and it was lovely that some participated.

I pray that St Donnan’s example will inspire us all to a life of deeper prayer and evangelisation.
