Praying with the Sick without a Priest or Deacon

If no priest or deacon is available these prayers for the sick can be led by a layperson in a family home, hospital or Care Home.
Leader: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen.
Leader: We gather to pray for our brother/sister N. We know from the Gospels that Jesus had a special care for the sick. We know that the Risen Jesus is with us today. Therefore, today we entrust our brother/sister to God’s tender love and seek his healing.
Let us begin our prayers by confidently asking for God’s mercy:
Leader: Lord have mercy.           All: Lord have mercy.
Leader: Christ have mercy.        All: Christ have mercy.
Leader: Lord have mercy.           All: Lord have mercy.
Scripture Reading
Jesus said: “Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.”
Intercessions

  • Leader: We pray that the Church will be an instrument of God’s healing and love. Lord hear us.
  • We pray for our brother/sister N. who is ill. In this time of weakness may he/she know that the Lord is close. Lord hear us.
  • For the Lord’s healing and strengthening of N……. and for all who are sick. Lord hear us.
  • That those who care for the sick will be blessed for their dedication and kindness. Lord hear us.
  • Let us pause and offer our own prayers.

We pray together as Jesus taught us: Our Father…….
Leader:
Lord and Father, almighty and eternal God,
you are the hope of all who believe in you,
turn with kindness towards this your servant N.
Free him/her from all illness and restore him/her to health.

Hear us also as we pray for all who are sick,
for their families who worry about them,
And for all those who care for them.
All: Amen.
Other prayers may now be offered such as the Hail Mary, Hail Holy Queen, Gaelic prayers or any other suitable devotion.
Leader: May the Lord bless us,
Protect us from all evil,
And bring us to everlasting life.
All: Amen.
All: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
