Bishop Ian Murray, in accordance with Canon 401 (para 1) submitted his resignation to the Pope earlier this year. In a reply from the Holy See last month he was advised that the Holy Father had accepted his resignation "nunc pro tunc", meaning "now for later", in other words, until such time as a successor is appointed.
Commenting on the process Bishop Murray said:
"I have been asked by the Pope to remain in post until such time as my successor is appointed and I am more than happy to do so. I will remain in the diocese fulfilling all my Episcopal obligations and look forward to welcoming my successor in due course."
Bishop Murray will be 75 on 15 December 2007.
