Homily for National Pilgrimage to Carfin

Before becoming Bishop of Argyll and the Isles I spent the previous nine years in the Royal Scots College in Salamanca in Spain, and in its cloister there is a painting of St John Ogilvie, which also hung for many years in the previous college location in Valladolid.
In preparation for tonight’s anniversary Mass I looked out the account of the opening of St. Mary’s Arisaig on 19th August 1849 in the Scottish Catholic Directory.....

Homily for profession of Sr. Maria Edith

In the first few weeks after I became Bishop a number of people spoke to me about the vocation of being a hermit, one of them being our sister Anne, who as well as telling me of her life in Germany as a hermit and of her desire to follow a similar path here in Scotland, presented me with her own rule and explained in detail what the vocation of a hermit entails....
The last verses in today’s gospel express teachings of Jesus which were very close to the heart and life of the Venerable Margaret Sinclair. She had a strong sense of accepting the cross of Christ in her life, and of following in the Lord’s footsteps in carrying this cross in whatever way it presented itself to her.

".....What does this holy lady, whom we are so proud to claim as our own, say to us today as Catholics here in Lochaber and the Highlands of Scotland? By living our faith well and by allowing the Word, the presence, the goodness of Christ in all its richness to find a home in us, we can proclaim the values of the Gospel by the example of our lives and by doing all that we can to bring his love and goodness to other people in our own situation, following our vocation, using the talents and opportunities God gives us each day to be witnesses to the Lord Jesus."

Easter Sunday Morning Mass

Bishop Joseph's homily for the Mass of Easter Sunday morning

Easter Vigil Mass

“Accept this Easter candle. May it always dispel the darkness of this night.”

Mass of the Lord's Supper

When someone we love dies the last things they did, the last things they said, the last gestures they made, all become very precious to us.........
The opening prayer of tonight’s Mass invoked the mystery and presence of the Holy Trinity – “Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit, you anointed your only Son Messiah and Lord of creation.”

Homily for Mass of Thanksgiving

On 6 November 2008 Mgr. Donald MacKinnon preached the homily for the Mass of Thanksgiving for Bishop Ian Murray's years of service in the diocese.
