The sun shone on Barra for the 2009 Fishermen’s Mass on the 12th July. The celebration began as the three o’clock bell rang out from the tower of the church of Our Lady, Star of the Sea.

Fr. Noel Colford, parish priest of Holy Cross on the Isle of Arran, recently addressed the Scottish Parliament. At the invitation of local MSP Kenneth Gibson, he gave the Time for Reflection message to the assembled MSPs and government officials.

Celebrating Our Lady of the Isles

The Statue of Our Lady of the Isles, Rueval, South Uist, was
consecrated on the Feast of the Assumption, August 15th, 1958, by Rt
Rev Kenneth Grant, Bishop of Argyll and the Isles. To mark the 50th
anniversary of the consecration, Mass was celebrated at the Statue
by Rt Rev Ian Murray, present Bishop of the Diocese.

It began simply as a Mass for the sick of our two parishes, on the 150th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady to Bernadette at Lourdes. However like the seed of any good or Godly idea, it grew quickly and beyond all expectation.
